Dr Praveen Kumar is a career bureaucrat belonging to the Indian Trade Service, recruited from the administrative services (UPSC) exam of 2011. He is currently working as Joint Director General of Foreign Trade at Mumbai and also heads the regional office of DGFT at Nagpur (RA Nagpur). In the MIHAN SEZ, Nagpur he took additional charge as the Development Commissioner in April 2024. The MIHAN SEZ has witnessed its yearly exports (merchandise plus services) grow from Rs 6935.99 Cr in FY 2024-25 to Rs. 9626.43 Cr in FY 2025-26, an increase of 38.78%.
Prior to Mumbai, Dr Praveen had completed his tenure as the Deputy Director General of Foreign Trade (Under Secretary), at the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) , Ministry of Commerce and Industry in New Delhi. At DGFT he contributed in conceptualizing and implementing the Remission of Duties and Taxes on Exported Products (RoDTEP Scheme) , with an annual budget ~Rs 20,000 Cr. He was also an attending member of the inaugural RoDTEP Committee, which formulated the rates of remission under the Scheme.
Prior to joining the Government of India in 2012, Praveen had a three year stint in different European / American strategy consulting firms in their healthcare verticals. Praveen graduated with an MBBS degree from the University College of Medical Sciences and GTB Hospital, Delhi University in 2006. International trade and investment, global value and supply chains and industrial policy are his key areas of interest. He has visited Slovakia, Switzerland and the USA in his official capacity.
