MIHAN SEZ at a glance

The Government of Maharashtra came up with the idea of setting up of a Multi-Product SEZ adjacent to the existing airport as a part of its flagship MIHAN project (Multi Modal International Passenger and Hub Airport at Nagpur) with an objective of harnessing the potential of the Vidharbha region and to remove the development backlog of the Region. MIHAN SEZ was approved by the Board of Approval is 2006, under the SEZ Act 2005 to be developed on a 1597.16 Ha land adjacent to the existing airport and within the MIHAN project of MADC. Subsequently, 360.95 Ha of land has been de-notified and the size of the SEZ has been reduced to 1236.21 ha.

MIHAN SEZ, spread over 1233 hectors, is one of its kind, in terms of size and focus. It is India’s first SEZ directly linked to an Airport and has aviation sector as one of its main focus areas. The location of the SEZ and the social and economic infrastructure developed in and around MIHAN provides a very unique advantage to this SEZ in terms of investment attractiveness.

MIHAN is one of the few SEZs, which is within the city limits of a designated Smart City, with world class urban infrastructure, excellent telecommunication and other social infrastructure such as scientific and technical institutions, management and healthcare institutions and hospitals, housing complex and sports facilities and metro connectivity which will be operational in few months.

The SEZ is being developed by MADC, a Govt. of Maharashtra undertaking, and there are 9 other co-developers who have obtained LOA for developing various facilities within the SEZ. Being a multiproduct SEZ there has been significant interest from various segments for setting up units, including IT/ITES and other Service industries, Pharmaceuticals, Food processing, Aerospace and Aviation related industry, etc. 64 units in various segments have already obtained approval out of which 26 units are already operational. Few more units are in the process of being operational.

Out of 1236.21 Ha of land, MADC has already allotted about 820 Ha to the existing and proposed units and about 417 Ha of land is available for establishing various units.

As a part of its ambitious plan of developing MIHAN SEZ as a hub for aerospace and aviation industry, MADC is developing runways and taxiways to provide the basic infrastructure for this sector and several big namses in the industry are already present in the SEZ, including Air India/Boeing, TAL and AAR Indamer. The ambitious project of the Reliance Group, i.e., Dhirubhai Ambani Aerospace Park, for which foundation stone was laid last year, is gradually taking shape with the establishment of the first unit of Dassault Reliance Aerospace Limited (DRAL), which will manufacture components for Falcon 2000 Series of Business Jets and also components for certain Fighter Jets.

Apart from the Aerospace industry, the SEZ has been the hub for several IT and ITES industry and all big names in the sector such as, TCS, Infosys, HCL, Tech Mahindra, Hexaware etc. are already operating from the SEZ and augmenting their facilities.

Several other IT & ITES enterprises have been steadily establishing themselves in the SEZ. With this MIHAN SEZ is poised to take a giant stride in terms of investment and exports, to realize the goal of harnessing the potential of the Vidharbha region and removing the development backlog of the Region, while contributing to the larger national economic interests.
