MIHAN Project at a glance

MIHAN (Multi Modal International Passenger and Hub Airport at Nagpur) and setting up of a Multi-Product SEZ adjacent to the Airport was envisaged by the Government of Maharashtra with an objective to remove the development backlog of Vidharbha Region and harnessing the potential of existing Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Airport at Nagpur. With that objective Maharashtra Airport Development Company Limited (MADC) was constituted in the year 2002 by Govt. of Maharashtra as a special purpose company to develop Multi-modal International Hub Airport at Nagpur (MIHAN) and Aviation Infrastructure in the State of Maharashtra to provide the regional air connectivity. The Government of Maharashtra also declared Maharashtra Airport Development Company Ltd. (MADC) as a Special Planning Authority for MIHAN Project. The government of India in January 2008 approved the proposal of Government of Maharashtra to develop Nagpur Airport as Multi Modal International Passenger and Hub Airport. MIHAN India Ltd. (MIL) was registered in the year 2009 and Airport Authority of India handed over the Nagpur Airport to MIL in the year August 2009. Since then MIL is operating and maintaining this Airport. MIHAN India Ltd has also taken steps to prepare the revised detailed master plan of this Airport and RFQ and RFP documents for appointment of concessionaire for developing this Airport on PPP basis. The project is being spearheaded by the Hon. Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shri Dveendra Fadnavis, who is also the chairman of MADC.

Nagpur is one of the largest cities in central India and the third largest city in Maharashtra after Mumbai and Pune. Located at the geographical center of the country the place is easily accessible by all modes of transport –road, rail and air. This endows the city with huge logistics potential.

The MIHAN project is spread over on about 4354 Ha. of land of which consists of expansion of the existing airport with new runway and international terminals covering about 1400 Ha, a large Multiproduct SEZ on 1238 Ha with focus on aviation and aerospace sector and also includes information Technology Parks, Hospitals, besides manufacturing and value- added units. Another 614 hectare of land has been reserved for rail and road terminals, residential and commercial complexes, international schools and hospitals, and other social and commercial infrastructure and others SEZ related facilities.

The airport at Nagpur is to be extended by 200 M to 3,600 x 45M along with a parallel second runway of 4,000x60m. The two runways will be separated by 1,600m to facilitate parallel take offs and landing. There will be parking space for 50 aircraft in the terminal and nearly 50 aircraft in the remote area. A 3 lakh Sq.M. terminal will be constructed in phases to meet the estimated 14 million passenger traffic and an estimated 8,70,000 tonnes of cargo. There is also a provision of space for setting up an aircraft engineering and maintenance base.

Keeping in view the increased commercial activities and global reach of the project an International Convention Centre has been planned within the MIHAN project. The project will soon have High Speed Rail and Road connectivity to major ports. Land had been allotted to container Corporation of India (CONCOR) for construction of a modern rail terminal. On completion, it proposes to have all the facilities necessary to make it efficient, cost effective and time saving. A Road Terminal has also been planned for parking of 1,000 trucks (Multi-axle) with open stock yards. These facilities will have warehouses, cold storages besides truck maintenance along with fueling, staff canteen, dormitories, Sulabh Complex, first aid, etc. Two dedicated domestic and international cargo terminals, with ample parking space for air cargo aircrafts, are in the pipeline.

Residential complexes are also being developed by Mahindra Lifespace and Moraj Infra on lands allotted by MADC next to the SEZ. Container Corporations of India Ltd(CONCOR) is constructing the Multi Modal Logistic Park (MMPL) along with a rail terminal connecting MIHAN with different ports in country. Indian institute of Management, Nagpur (IIM-N) is also going to be set up on 142 acres in Non SEZ area of MIHAN along with all India Institute of Medical science (AIIMS) on 150 acres. A Health city will come up in 150 acres by the name “INDO-UK MEDICITY. Patanjali Ayurved is constructing a “MEGA FOOD PARK” in sprawling 234 acres of land.

With the development of MIHAN, the whole Vidharbha region is expected to witness a boost in economic activities and employment opportunities for the people around this area while attracting qualified and skilled talent form Maharashtra as well as rest of India and abroad.
